Why July Feels Like the Calm Before the Storm in Bozeman

At Bozeman Counseling Center, July is typically one of our busiest months for new clients.

That always confused me a little bit. Not that it’s ever a bad time to seek out counseling, but I’ve always thought of mid-summer as a time when people are fully immersed in their outdoor activities.

July is the height of summer in Bozeman, and as a community, we look forward to these warm months all year—whether we’re out floating the Madison, camping at Cliff Lake and Wade Lake, or getting ready for the Sweet Pea Festival and the SLAM Festival.

But recently, while shopping for items for our counseling office, I saw a lot of college students and parents doing back-to-school shopping. And it got me thinking…

In Bozeman, summers are short. Even while we’re enjoying July, it makes sense that people start realizing there are only a few weeks left of warm weather before we return to our regular routines for school, college, and work. By mid-August, summer break is wrapping up, family vacations are winding down, and you can already feel that crisp morning air hinting that fall is right around the corner.

Throughout the Gallatin Valley, we’re used to things filling up fast—whether it’s summer camps, local concerts, back-to-school shelves at Target, or prime therapy appointment slots.

So it makes total sense that starting in July and carrying right into August, people are planning ahead. They’re looking at the start of the school year and wanting to secure their preferred time for therapy sessions before the fall rush fully hits.

Even though we prefer for college students to reach out themselves, we also get a lot of calls from parents looking to secure counseling for their Montana State University freshmen heading away from home for the first time. It’s wonderful to see parents thinking ahead—counseling can offer vital support for college students navigating such a major life transition.

July and August are special times here: we’re enjoying the best of summer in Montana, but we’re also preparing for the transition into fall.

If you’ve ever wondered what the most sought-after counseling slots are—it’s definitely anything after 4:00 p.m.!

Those evening spots fill up the quickest at Bozeman Counseling Center, and once people secure them, they rarely give them up. That’s why we continue to add new clinicians to our practice every year, ensuring we can meet the growing needs of our community, in Bozeman and throughout the Gallatin Valley.

We also recently relocated to 2001 Stadium Drive, placing us right down the road from campus for students, administrative staff, and professors. Montana State University offers great insurance coverage for both students and employees, making therapy accessible and affordable. Additionally, we offer Counseling for All Budgets; a program for individuals without robust insurance coverage who still want quality care.

If you’re starting to prepare for the upcoming season and want to get ahead of your fall routine, now is the perfect time to reach out.

Parents of incoming MSU freshmen: encourage your student to fill out the contact form on our website, and our team will follow up to help them secure an appointment.

The fastest way to get started or ask questions is through our contact form. A member of our client care team will get back to you promptly.

With a little planning, you might even snag one of those coveted evening slots. But if not, don't worry—as a larger practice, our diverse team of therapists offers flexible schedules to fit your needs.

Enjoy these final weeks of summer, Bozeman! Soak up the sunshine, head out on the water, enjoy the festival season, and grab those back-to-school supplies at Target before the shelves are bare. 😉

We look forward to connecting with you soon!
